American shipyard Viking Yachts built just 21 hulls of its 92-foot sportsfishing yacht, the Viking 92, before discontinuing this model in 2022 due to emissions regulations. However, to this day, the Viking 92 remains an incredibly sought-after model as it offers the perfect mix of high-performance sportsfishing with the luxuries of a superyacht. When the Viking 92 was debuted at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2014, it was the largest yacht built in the shipyard’s 50-year history. Available in three main configurations- open bridge, enclosed bridge, and sky bridge, for every style of fishing and cruising, she was also one of the most technologically advanced yachts in her class at the time. The laminated hull combined hybrid fibreglass with carbon fibre, whilst propulsion options available ranged from twin CAT C32A diesels to MTU’s triple-turbo 16V M96L engines, good for top speeds of up to 38 knots. With a range of roughly 1,500 nautical miles at 12 knots, the Viking 92 was built for serious cruising time in the Bahamas and further.
One of the Viking 92’s defining qualities is that she is able to meet the needs of two very different owners completely. For those who enjoy deep-sea fishing, she offers a 238-square-foot cockpit with a fighting chair, dual mezzanine decks, and a helm station purpose-built around bill-fishing. Then, for those who enjoy spending time out on the open waters with their family and friends, she features four ensuite staterooms on the lower deck, including a full-beam owner’s suite with a king berth, walk-in closet, and his-and-hers facilities, plus dedicated crew quarters aft. The main deck and its 23-foot beam open up a salon with formal dining for eight, a granite-countered galley, and walk-in pantries. Few yachts in any category perform two roles this well, which is precisely why demand has continued to outlive her production run.
As construction of the Viking 92 was eventually halted, not due to a lack of demand, but rather pending emissions regulations requiring selective catalytic reduction equipment that would have added weight and cost, whilst compromising the performance that defined the model, it comes as no surprise that the Viking 92 remains in high regard to this day. Rather than risk diluting the potency of its former flagship model, Viking followed up the Viking 92 with the smaller Viking 90. Today, the brokerage market remains the only way to own a Viking 92, with well-maintained models holding their market position unusually well and selling on average rather quickly when listed.
